EFC Africa’s newest middleweight, JP Kruger dropped in at the EFC AFRICA offices for a few photos this morning. While he was here we asked him to share the story behind his unusual fighting name, Tinkerbell. The tattooed mohawked striking machine was happy to oblige.
“Why should every fighter have this breeker image?” asks Kruger. “I’m happy with a fighting name that captures the lighter side of life. Like my coach says, first my opponents feel the tinkle, then they hear the bell.” According to coach Raymond Phillips, when Kruger arrived at XKT (Xtreme Kickboxing Technologies) he was carrying a lot of intensity and frustration. “He was walking around all ‘uurrgh!’ so we needed to give him something to break his rhythm and calm him down. We started calling him Tinkerbell.” Believe it or not, it worked, and Kruger now carries Tinkerbell with pride. “It’s actually not just a fighting name, it’s a superhero name, like Superman or Hulk,” says Kruger. “After all, everyone knows ginger kids are born with superpowers…” Find out whether Tinkerbell’s ‘superpowers’ will be enough to defeat Pete Motaung at EFC AFRICA 12 on 2 March.
